TSAVORITE
GEMSTONE:
TSAVORITE GARNET FROM TSAVOR, KENYA
The
beautifully-colored, green, shining gemstone known as Tsavorite,
or the Tsavorite Garnet, is found in East Africa along the Kenya
and Tanzania border. Patrick and Anne Kelley travel to the
wild African landscape, near the Tsavo National Park,
specifically to mine for the Tsavorite gemstone. The
Tsavorite's bright green color and brilliant transparency make
it a sought after gemstone for their hand-crafted jewelry.
The Tsavorite is in the grossular
family of garnets. A rare gemstone until the mid-twentieth
century, the Tsavorite was protected by the Tanzanian
government, which did not provide permits to export the gemstone
until 1971. The Tsavorite gained notoriety only after
Tiffany & Co. launched a marketing campaign sparked by its
interest in the newly-discovered beauty of the Tsavorite
Garnet. Even the name, "Tsavorite", was chosen
by the president of Tiffany & Co., in honor of the Tsavo
National Park. Though a clean Tsavorite is rarely found in
excess of 1 carat, it has been found in sizes up to 15 carats.
